How it works
A clear, low-risk way to explore working together
My process is designed to reduce risk, protect boundaries and ensure the right support is provided at the right time.
Everything starts with fit, not selling. The same fit-first process applies whether the work ultimately involves consultancy, mentoring or coaching.
Step 1: A short ‘fit’ call
In our initial conversation I’ll be looking to understand a little about your situation and challenges in order to sense-check whether there may be a fit. It’s not a sales call, rather it’s a filter for both of us. A chance for us to decide whether it’s worth exploring further.
Step 2: Discovery / chemistry session
If it feels worth continuing, we move to a longer conversation during which I’ll be looking to gain more clarity about your organisation and current situation. Drawing on my experience working across a range of health and social care organisations and contexts we will explore your organisational context and constraints, what outcomes matter most, what’s already in place and whether consultancy, mentoring or coaching is the right approach.
Step 3: Agreeing how to work together
If we decide to proceed, this is where we agree the type of support (consultancy, mentoring or coaching); the scope, focus and timescales; and clarify boundaries, confidentiality and review points. Everything will be explicit and documented.
Step 4: Working together
The work itself is outcome-led. At agreed points we will review where we are and, as appropriate, adapt the approach as learning emerges.
In consultancy, I provide strong recommendations and clear priorities. The organisation retains ownership of decisions and implementation.
Step 5: Review and ending
All work has planned review points where we can assess value and learning. You are never locked in. If it’s no longer useful, we stop.
Budget and value
This work does not require a large marketing budget. Organisations may engage me for short, focused pieces of consultancy or light-touch ongoing proportionate support. The cost is usually quickly offset by stopping activity that isn’t working or improving decision-making at key points.
The emphasis is on clarity, judgement and prioritisation, not volume of work or long-term commitments.
I work independently, without agency overheads, and do not charge VAT which often makes this support more accessible for health and social care organisations. Fees are agreed upfront, with no surprises.
Different routes, same principles
While consultancy, mentoring and coaching serve different purposes, they share the same foundations: clarity about roles, boundaries, outcomes and review.
The right route depends on context – not labels – and is something we decide together.
Who this is for?
This way of working suits organisations and individuals who:
- Are committed to providing high-quality health or social care services
- Can evidence this through outcomes, feedback, inspection history or learning culture
- Want strategic insight and clear recommendations, not generic advice
- Have marketing capability either in-house or outsourced
- Value independent challenge and professional judgement
- Have a budget allocated for professional support (even if modest)
Who this is not for?
It is not a good fit for:
- Start-up organisations or those in the early stages of growth
- Organisations looking for free advice or informal guidance without budget
- Situations where there is no appetite to invest, even modestly, in improvement
- Organisations looking for someone to run campaigns or deliver activity day-to-day
- Providers seeking reassurance without challenge or accountability
- Organisations whose practices or standards are misaligned with delivering safe, high-quality care
Start with fit
If you’re curious, the best place to start is a short conversation.
